Week 2 of Camp Life Launch: Rangers, Roast Chicken, and a $20 Ice Cream Bonus

This week brought a new partnership, a surprising food upset, and an unexpected heat-wave hustle.

We kicked things off with a new relationship with the LA County Parks Department, meeting Ranger Sean for what was supposed to be a fire safety lesson. Instead, a real fire broke out and pulled the fire team elsewhere — so Ranger Sean pivoted, and campers got an introduction to the mounted unit instead, the horses Rangers use to reach emergencies in spots vehicles can't get to. We also got a real sense of just how much parkland Los Angeles has, and how many free recreational resources are sitting there for any Angeleno to use. Fire safety is officially on the calendar for next time.

On the food front, this week delivered a genuine plot twist. When we mapped out the week's lunches, roast chicken with vegetables was the unanimous pick for "most boring." By Friday, campers were licking the sheet pan clean for the last scraps of roasted potato. Never underestimate a roast chicken.

And with a heat wave rolling through, the car-washing foam gun turned into the week's biggest hit — so big, a neighbor stopped by to get her car washed too. She was so impressed, she handed the campers $20 for an ice cream run up to Franklin's Cafe in Griffith Park. Hard to beat a day that ends in free ice cream, earned.
